HardStop and Chromebook

HardStop doesn't work on Chromebook, and there's nothing to announce for it. The same is true for Linux, smart TVs and games consoles.

HardStop works on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Windows, with Android phones and tablets in beta. One membership covers up to 10 devices in your household, so you can protect every supported device you and your family use.

If a Chromebook is the main device in your home, HardStop can't protect it today, and we'd rather tell you that up front. The built-in options below help, and HardStop can protect your other devices.

Other ways to block porn on a Chromebook

General guidance using Google's built-in tools. These are not HardStop features.

1

For a child's Chromebook: Google Family Link

In the Family Link app on your phone, select your child, then Controls, then Google Chrome and Web, and choose Try to block explicit sites. It only covers a child's supervised Google Account.

2

For your own Chromebook: a family DNS filter

In ChromeOS Settings, open Network, choose your Wi-Fi network, then set Name servers to custom and enter a family filter's addresses, such as Cloudflare for Families (1.1.1.3 and 1.0.0.3). Repeat for each Wi-Fi network you use.

3

Turn on SafeSearch

In Google Search settings, turn SafeSearch on so explicit results are filtered in search.

4

Know the limits

Anyone who can change these settings can switch them off in seconds, and there is no wait time. That's the gap HardStop closes on the devices it supports.

Questions

Does HardStop work on a Chromebook?+
No. Chromebook isn't supported and there is nothing to announce for it.
How else can I block porn on a Chromebook?+
Use Google Family Link for a child's account, a family DNS filter in the Chromebook's network settings, and SafeSearch. These help, but anyone with access to the settings can turn them off.
What devices does HardStop support?+
iPhone, iPad, Mac and Windows, with Android phones and tablets in beta. Setting up a phone or tablet needs a Mac or Windows computer, once.
Can I use HardStop on my other devices?+
Yes. One membership covers up to 10 devices in your household, including family members' devices.
What does it cost?+
Both plans start with a 7-day free trial and there is no charge if you cancel during it. Then it is $180 a year (works out to $15 a month) or $25 every 4 weeks. Both plans have the same features, and one membership covers up to 10 devices in your household.
Can anyone see what I browse?+
No. HardStop does not monitor or log browsing. It cannot see your history, searches, messages, photos or screen, and no root certificate is installed, so traffic is never opened or scanned.
