How HardStop works on Android

HardStop for Android is available now, in beta, on phones and tablets from Samsung, Google and the other major brands.

Setup installs the HardStop app on the phone and makes it the phone's device manager. That is the Android equivalent of how HardStop protects an iPhone. Adult sites are blocked in every browser, including incognito, and all images and video on Reddit, X and Tumblr are blocked.

Removal only happens after a wait time you choose, from 72 hours up to 1 year. There is nothing to download from the Play Store first. You set it up from the HardStop app on a Mac or Windows computer.

How to set it up

About 5 to 10 minutes per device. Full steps arrive after you start your trial.

1

Start on your computer

In the HardStop app on your computer, click Set up Android.

2

Turn on USB debugging

On the phone, tap Build number seven times to turn on Developer options, then turn on USB debugging.

3

Plug in and allow

Plug the phone in, unlock it and allow USB debugging from this computer. Then click Detect device and Protect this device.

4

Clear the way

If anything is in the way, such as another user or an account like Google, the app shows you what to remove and opens the right page. Your accounts aren't deleted and can go back on after setup.

5

Verify

On the phone, enter the email you signed up with and the 6-digit code. Keep it plugged in until this is done.

What you need

  • A Mac or Windows computer with the HardStop app installed and signed in.
  • A USB cable that carries data, not a charge-only one.
  • About 5 minutes.

What changes

  • Your apps, photos and messages are untouched.
  • VPNs can't be used.
  • A factory reset is blocked until HardStop is removed.
  • Browsers that could get around the filter, such as Tor, are blocked.

Honest limits

  • Android support is in beta. If you get stuck, email support@tryhardstop.com and the team will walk you through it.
  • You need a Mac or Windows computer for setup. There is no phone-only setup.

Questions

Is HardStop on Android finished?+
It is available now and in beta. It works on phones and tablets from Samsung, Google and the other major brands, and support will help if setup gets stuck.
Will I lose my accounts?+
No. Some accounts, such as Google, WhatsApp or Facebook, may need to leave the phone during setup, but they aren't deleted and you can add them back afterwards.
Can I block other apps too?+
Yes. Extra apps and websites are blocked under Additional Blocking, Android, at no extra cost. They get the same wait time.
Can I turn it off myself?+
Not instantly. Removal is in the Profile tab after your wait time, from 72 hours to 1 year.
What does it cost?+
Both plans start with a 7-day free trial and there is no charge if you cancel during it. Then it is $180 a year (works out to $15 a month) or $25 every 4 weeks. Both plans have the same features, and one membership covers up to 10 devices in your household.
Can anyone see what I browse?+
No. HardStop does not monitor or log browsing. It cannot see your history, searches, messages, photos or screen, and no root certificate is installed, so traffic is never opened or scanned.
What if something gets through?+
Email support@tryhardstop.com and the team blocks it for every member. Under the Zero Access Guarantee, if adult content gets through because HardStop's own service failed and they cannot block it within 5 business days, they refund every dollar you have paid. Bypasses, platform changes and unsupported OS versions are not covered.
